An Ode to Engineering!!

here's a ballad dedicated to 3 years of engineering:

I was 18 when i stepped in,
excited I was and all smiling!
To learn engineering we all had come..
on the first day, i dont remember anyone being glum!

A room full of strangers was what i first saw,
everyone silent, as if they had lock jaw!
faces were blank as they all looked around,
when the lecturer came in, you couldnt here a sound!!

fun were those days in the first year,
a million smiles and a handful of tears!
New new people and a whole new life!
who would think it would turn out to be such a strife!!

oh, those were the days, full of fun and frolic..
no sign of fear, no hint of panic...
lazy were we and so were the days..
it was like going through a little kids play!!

alas my friend, it wouldnt last forever,
365 days were all there were...

2 months of holidays were like heaven!
no single worry, nor any problem...

september came, along with the second year,
that was when many got the first taste of beer!
excited we were, full of enthusiasm,
in our horizon, there was no chasm...
then began classes and labs galore,
we then saw a few teachers, bout whom we had only heard in college folklore!

welcome to the department, they all screamed aloud!
when we heard it, we all felt proud!
it was a blindman's game, the second year...
going from pillar to post, learning unknown fears...

internals came and labs kept visiting..
when we got through them, we had stopped smiling!
we learnt the harder side of engineering,
fun was'nt the only thing we were chasing!
marks were necessary but so elusive!
enjoyment turned from active to passive!!

But we struggled through and made it somehow...
we learnt the art of explaining 'bout the tree by tying it to a cow!!!
we learnt the lessons of hardwork and nightouts..
got through crunch sessions, despite all blackouts!

it was quite an experience this year was,
the whole class momentarily came together, forming one single voice!
it was a new lease of life to many a soul..
and this helped keep away the worry ghoul!

we learnt to obey and hold our words...
coz we learnt that banging your head against the wall is very absurd!!
sarcasm and cynicsm came along...
they became our friends before long!!

But somehow again, we got through!
scoring marks by hook or crook.
again came hols and were like an oasis...
'coz we had just come out of the exam crisis!!

Before long, 3rd year came along..
the teachers said:
"our role is now reduced, its your call!
study study and work hard , you'l sure have a ball!!"
but amart as we were we lost track of life...
classes became an attendence call!

fed up we were of long nights and records,
many swore that when they got through,
they would burn these same records...

bags were weighed down with tension and books,
no one had time to take care of thier looks!!
internals became a 3 day show...
life became the story of the thirsty crow!!

but spirited as we were we didnt let it bother..
kept filling ourself with hope and laughter!!

now we are three quarters through with a year to go,
there's still something left in this show...
a stunning climax or a twist in tow,
what will happen, we donot know!!!!!

wandering thoughts!

Well, long time coming in my latest blog, but i was held up! lots of things happening in a very little time!
And that brings me to today's topic, "TIME"!!!!

This is that simple 4 letter word that has driven everyone bonkers throughout ages. what is time, what does it do? where did it come from? where's it going? what the heck is it? how did it all begin?
It's an enigma of sorts! we always keep talking about time, it's management and usually the lack of it, but truthfully, what the heck is it?

Isn't time a RELATIVE mumbo-jumbo that we humans have cooked up to keep things in check? isn't it just a frame of reference between two events? see, again, these questions just keep popping up! For some reason, I'm possessed about time today! I dont know why...
Every time I look up at the sky, I start wondering a lot. in this huge universe, to think that we are the only living beings is sheer stupidity! it is just not possible that only we on this tiny speck of a planet in the gigantic universe are the only living things! what's out there? surely, more than what we can ever imagine! just try to imagine the vastness of this universe! and think, what if there is more than one universe?what if there are multiple universes existing parallelly?! but then again, what is universe? isn't it just a sort of a mental map we've drawn to satisfy ourselves bout what little we've learnt about this existence of ours?

so, in the end, what is time again? whats it doing with our lives? we are on a one way course into the future. but suppose, just suppose, if we could just pause time for an instance, what would happen? would the universe fall into itself? or could we just for a small period, understand the inner dynamics of our existence? or, for that matter, the reason for everything being as it is!!!

i don't know how many of you know about this amazing theory called CHAOS THEORY, but i think its the best theory ever proposed. it just makes a simple statement - "random discrete happenings which seem disconnected, all in a chaotic manner contribute to the occurrence of another seemingly random event which after a long period of time, seems to have been inter connected"

think, how many times have you done one thing instead of the other , resulting in a different result, which in turn led to another occurrence, which results in a whole new different occurrence! imagine a whole such cycle unfolding into a totally new end result! which in turn is actually a minor happening, leading to another huge cataclysmic occurrence!

so, even if one person somewhere in some corner of the world makes one different decision, the pattern follows and affects another person in some other part of the globe! so, if some single speck of an atom in some deep depths of the universe breaks up, we here on earth will face some sort of an effect.
going by this, i think we can say that every action of ours is resulting in one huge event in the future. it may be right or wrong at the time being, but nobody knows what it'll be in the future. so, we can actually say that there are no wrong or right moves, there are only moves...

and time, is actually a catalyst in making any of these so called 'futuristic' events coming into fruition! isn't it wierd that sometimes, things just happen! as if it were pre-planned and excecuted! but who's doing this planning? thats where this huge void in our understanding opens up... we humans have devoted ourselves to understanding bout everything. we may have learnt a lot about the physical world, but when it comes to questions like these, everyone just makes a blank face and says random abstract stuff which has no meaning whatsoever! no wonder time is so elusive when you need it the most!

It's Christmas!
It's that jolly time of the year when you relax and chill out...
But, unfortunately, for a few of us engineering students, its the cram time- the period of so called study for the oncoming Sem-End exams!
All that apart, i saw the movie "3 IDIOTS" today.... its a nice movie, and is totally relevant to what i'm trying to say.... I really wish few of my college-mates see it and realize that it's better to learn and understand rather than mug up everything and score marks without even knowing a least bit about the subject.
They are not to blame totally, because after-all, they do it because they've been raised in such a form of academics. The whole criteria of judging a person by his grades or marks should go. It's just based on a simulated performance of the student in the so called tests that these marks are assigned and they don't throw any light on a person's real-time skills and abilities. And this has come to such a level that people actually memorize and reproduce stuff without bothering to learn about it. and yet they score marks. tell me, how does this actually reflect a person's expertise in the subject?
And if this is not enough, the institutions also push the students towards the edge, giving them deadline after another deadline, pressurizing them to do well or perish. in the midst of all this, there is never enough time to even think properly, you just do many things just because you have to.
And one more thing, we are now in the age of Open-source. The whole world is becoming an open book. So what is wrong in referring other materials for your convenience? why don't people move with times and accept this? Isn't the whole concept of the so called COPYING outdated? In other words, it is just another form of sharing. So, what is wrong with it? Aren't we sharing knowledge that way? The whole emphasis is on scoring marks right? So why should the institutions be bothered bout how you score it?
It's time that at least we students realized this. Stop trying to run in the Rat-race because even if you win, you'l still be a rat. Rather, lets blaze our own trail and leave the world in awe.... what say my friends? Think about it....
